Jacob Garcia is a Dominican-Colombian American documentary filmmaker and visual journalist from New York City, now based in Boston.
Rooted in a first-generation experience and driven by a deep sense of purpose, he tells stories that spotlight underrepresented voices — always with the hope of shaping a more just world for the next generation.
Garcia studied documentary filmmaking at Florida State University and cut his teeth creating educational media on economic inequality at Inequality Media, under former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich. He went on to produce, shoot, report, and edit stories for GBH News, before deepening his editorial range through a year-long fellowship at WBUR, where he left a major mark on social video and supported national newscasts and podcasts.
Since 2024, Garcia has run his own video production company, creating documentaries and visual stories for startups, nonprofits, and media organizations. In between gigs, he freelances as a journalist, continuing to pursue impactful, character-driven reporting.
Equal parts documentarian, journalist, and image-maker, Garcia works fluidly across film, photo, audio, and the written word. His work has appeared on NPR, PBS NewsHour, WBUR, GBH News, and Inequality Media.
He is a proud member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, The Video Consortium, NPPA, and one of Diversify Photo’s “Photographers to Watch.”
Garcia’s stories explore themes of diaspora, identity, and human connection — always with a sharp eye toward justice and empathy.
On weekends, you’ll find him behind a drum kit, thrifting, or behind a sewing machine, carrying on a craft passed down by his grandmother.
